Yaz Litigation Continues To Grow

Bayer sued over Yaz

They are what is known as a fourth generation birth control pill.

Yaz and Yasmin, along with its generic form Ocella (made by Barr Pharmaceutical), contain drospirenone, which is a synthetic form of progestin. That hormone has actually been shown to increase the potassium levels in the body, leading to irregular heart rhythm, blood clots and gallbladder disease, stroke, deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and heart attacks.

Yaz and Yasmin have been aggressively promoted as a panacea for preventing pregnancy and even acne. Drug maker, Bayer has been called on the misleading television campaign overstating the drug’s effectiveness in treating acne, PMS and pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), irritability, moodiness, headache, acne, feeling anxious, even fatigue and bloating.

Bayer agreed to pull the ads and reached an agreement with the Food and Drug Administration in 2008 to run $20 million in correction ads. But where does that leave the many women still on the birth control pills? When the European Union forced Bayer to add warning labels to the birth control pills, the FDA followed in April with a mandate that Bayer add stronger warnings in the U.S.

We are concerned that these warnings may not be strong enough. Women on Yaz are twice as likely to get blood clots say two studies published in the British Medical Journal last year. The article talks about a 27-year-old who must be on blood thinners for the rest of her life after taking Yaz. She had no other risks for pulmonary embolism. Another 18-year-old had to have her gallbladder removed.

Meanwhile Bayer insists that there is no additional risk to Yaz and Yasmin than other birth control pills.

There is no doubt why Bayer continues bragging about its pills.

Despite 1,100 lawsuits, and a growing number of cases, the drugs remain a top seller for Bayer with more than $1.64 billion in sales in 2009. We believe women who have suffered blood clots from these birth control pills may be eligible to join class-action lawsuits that have formed around the country and should contact an experienced Jacksonville drug injury attorney if they have experienced any of the side effects from taking Yaz or Yasmin.
